The Origin of Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day or Saint Valentine's Day is celebrated every year on February 14th. Named after early Christian martyrs, called Valentine, and also associated with Geoffrey Chaucer and the Middle Ages. Since the 19th century, handwritten valentines notes have been exchanged between sweethearts.

First recorded mention of Valentine's Day

It is said that Valentine's Day was first mentioned in the literary text, ‘Parlement of Foules’, by Geoffrey Chaucer.

“For this was on Seynt Volantynys day”

Many of Chaucer's texts refer to the ideal of chivalry; chivalry not as we know it today, but traditionally referring to the medieval institution of knighthood and the ideals of knightly virtue, honour and courtly love, or romantic love. It is this ideal of romantic love that is, in part, where valentines originates from; that, and of course, the two Christian martyrs.

Modern Valentine's Day Celebrations

Valentine's Day has become one of the more widely celebrated holidays in the calendar. Nowadays, Valentine's Day is a little more commercialised. Valentine's cards are now simply general greeting cards rather than declarations of love. It is estimated that approximately one billion valentines are sent each year worldwide, falling second in the sales numbers just behind Christmas cards.
